Showcases

Switzerland has a long tradition as a force of innovation in developing computing machines of all types. Mechanical computational tools, such as the exhibits shown, were already in use in the 19th century and were followed by the first locally produced digital computing machines. And the direct precursor of today’s computer was, ultimately, the electronic workstation Lilith – developed at ETH Zurich. With the founding of SWITCH in 1987, the building blocks were laid for a high-performance infrastructure for data traffic in Swiss science. SWITCH thereby joins the ranks of stakeholders that have helped and continue to help shape Switzerland’s digital landscape. We are committed to increased cybersecurity, promoting the universal use of digital identities and offering the community a data protection-compliant cloud. We also operate and protect the .ch and .li domains and other critical digital infrastructures. This is how we promote knowledge exchange and lay the groundwork for future innovations.
